Training talk

I think I'm going to have to find an online runner's dictionary or something, because darned if I can figure out what fartleks or tempo runs or splits mean. Speedwork I understand, and training runs and long runs, but the rest is just Greek to me. Also, fartleks? Bwahahahaha! (/adolescent boy humor)

Adele drove over last night (drove a half mile in order to run. We got a kick out of that) and we headed off into the muggy night with our iPods. Yesterday was supposed to be a rest day for me, but she'd been gone for a week to Chicago and wanted to get out and do something and I was more than happy to oblige. I overdid it though. My hip hurts so much today that I'm actually limping and I'm going home at lunch to take a hot bath. I admit I'm feeling a bit silly and frightened by this. I even made an appointment with a sports chiropractor to see if this is anything that an orthotic device or massage can help with. I've been comforting myself with the idea that my quads and shins are also sore, but the hip pain is quite different.

After Adele and I did 2.5 miles, we ran back to the house and sat out on the porch talking about bathing suit shopping. For some reason I sat down and didn't stretch out, and when I got up fifteen minutes later it was like my muscles had frozen in place. I haven't been that sore since I started this running program. I actually iced my hip, knee, and shins, but despite that I was ultra-aware of the pain even in my sleep. I moaned every time I turned over in bed, and you know, not in the good way. Today I'm doped up on ibuprofen and green tea, and trying to be gentle with myself.

If I'm honest I'll admit that the reason I was so gung-ho to go running again last night was because I was hoping to see a drop on the scale this morning. I did, but at quite a cost. The last thing I want to do at this early point is overtrain and cause a real injury.

Once again my dumb focus on the numbers gets me in trouble. You'd think I'd have learned by now. :)
